The site is a small,flat, previously undeveloped inward looking lot surrounded by dense vegetation and houses in the middle of a mature resort community. A residence for a husband and wife who requested the guest quarters feel isolated and private, while convenient to the main components of the house. The goal was a small house on a small lot that felt large.
The plan is a simple L, with the main arm of the house downstairs running from the front to the back of the lot, and the guest quarters located in the perpendicular arm upstairs. The L-shaped design was pushed to the outer edges of the lot to increase the interior yard and sense of space. The large native Ficus Aurea (with its captive palm) was relocated to the southeast rear corner to provide a focal point and maximize a sense of depth from the otherwise relatively small interior lot.
The upstairs guest quarters line a balconied outdoor hallway which is intentionally reminiscent of a motel corridor where guests are to feel free to come and go as they please and enjoy a certain independence from the main quarters of the house. The guestrooms can be reached either by a separate dedicated outdoor stair or a second interior stair. Adjacent to this Hall a native grass covered roof blends the house into its environment while reducing high sun heat loads on the house. |
