A stepped hillside site in a 1930s small lot subdivision enjoying lush south facing canyon views by day and Los Angeles city lights by night. The phalanx shaped footprint and minimized fenestration to either adjacent lot anticipated future construction in the neighborhood. A central kitchen hub is intersected by public spaces funneling a series of view segments back to the core of the structure. Northern light infuses upper level connections to bedrooms, each oriented towards specific features of this canyon perch.
Much consideration was given to this wood framed structures ability to withstand the inevitable canyon firestorms and to take advantage of the efficient canyon updraft ventilation as well as collection of daytime solar warmth for nighttime reradiation. |
